Blueberry banana dog treats

Homemade dog treats are a great way to spoil your pup. While I do love to spoil Sugar, part of the reason I make treats for her is health-related.

I have a senior dog, so soft dog treats tend to work better for her than super crunchy ones. If you have a dog with dental issues, this can be a good option.

Banana treats for dogs are naturally sweet, but keep in mind that they shouldn’t have too much.

They also help with an upset stomach, which is another reason to make dog treats with banana in them if your dog has digestive issues.

Banana oatmeal dog treats

These dog treats are really tasty. I can say this because I’ve eaten them. No questionable ingredients, and for the cost of one store-bought bag, you’ll get at least twice as many by making them yourself.

That’s worth the effort right there, if you ask me. Speaking of effort… it’s hardly any at all. DIY dog treats that take about 30 minutes from start to finish.

Recently, Sugar was diagnosed with IBD and gastritis. Our vet suggested oatmeal (among other things) when she isn’t feeling well. I have quite a few oatmeal dog treats on the blog, so luckily I was prepared.

Homemade dog treats with banana and oatmeal work for Sugar, and because I had some blueberries in the fridge, I tossed those into the mix.

How to make homemade dog cookies

The first step in making this treat is grinding the oats in the food processor. When the oats are almost flour, they are done and we can add the rest of the ingredients.

The dough is made entirely in the food processor, then it is scooped and baked.

If you stash ripe bananas in the freezer for baking or smoothies, this is the perfect time to use one.

The dough for these dog cookies is a little sticky, so I don’t recommend rolling it out.

I used a small cookie scoop that holds just over a tablespoon and the recipe gave me 30 treats. If you use a slightly larger or smaller scoop, your yield will vary by a few pieces.

Once you have all of the dough scooped onto the baking sheets, flatten the tops with wet fingers. Slide into the oven and bake! That’s it. It could not be easier.

How to store homemade dog treats

If you live in a cooler, less humid climate, you can store these treats in a cute dog treat jar on the counter for about a week.

Because I live in a warmer, humid climate, I’d only keep them on the counter for a few days, then store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

You can also freeze them and take out a few at a time, which is what I do most of the time.

Blueberry Banana Dog Treats

Quick and easy homemade blueberry banana dog treats to spoil for pup.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Cooling Time 10 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 2 eggs (large)
  • 1 medium banana
  • 3/4 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (176°C).
  2. Add oats to the bowl of a food processor. Let machine run for 2 - 3 minutes, until oats are almost flour consistency with a few big pieces left.
  3. Add eggs, banana, blueberries and flour to the food processor and pulse 10 - 15 times to break everything up and get it incorporated into the dough.
  4. Let the machine run for 30 - 60 seconds until the dough is uniform, then turn off and remove bowl.
  5. Scoop with small cookie scoop and drop on a parchment (or silpat)-lined sheet pan.
  6. Flatten tops with wet fingers to form a circle.
  7. Bake for 18 - 20 minutes, rotating halfway through.
  8. Cool completely before giving to your dog.

For even softer treats, reduce baking time by two minutes. For crunchier treats, increase time by 4 - 6 minutes.

You can easily break the treats in half, or quarters, if you have a very small dog.

  1. I have a small processor to grind the oatmeal but not large enough to process the whole recipe. Can I process the oatmeal and then finish it in another bowl? I am in the process of adopting an abandoned, abused Chiweenie. He has no teeth and needs a soft treat. Thanks for any advice you have.

    1. Hi Barbara, first let me say that your new adopted boy is lucky to have you as his new dog Mom! Yes, you can grind the oatmeal in your food processor and then mix everything by hand in another bowl. When baking, make sure they don’t get too browned, so they stay soft for your pup. Store them in the fridge so they stay fresh longer 🙂

    1. YAY!!! Thank you so much, Tracy! I really appreciate you taking the time to leave me such lovely feedback! I’m so happy that Mia loved these treats! <3

  2. All 3 of our dogs love these treats (2 great white pyrs & a black lab mix)!!! This is a great recipe for when I don’t feel like cutting and rolling (since I started late tonight). Thank you for a fast recipe!

    1. Hi Julie! Thank you so much! I’m thrilled that your pups love them 🙂 I agree, sometimes, I don’t feel like rolling and cutting, so it’s nice to have a recipe that I can scoop!

    1. Hi Angela 🙂 Yes, you can use all purpose flour, or whole wheat flour, if that’s what you have. I would avoid almond flour, coconut flour, etc.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  3. Hi Cheryl
Thankyou for sharing your dog treat recipes.
Before I start I would like to question the flour. I’ve never understood feeding dogs flour so I’ve always avoided it. I use a lot of coconut, almond flour in my own cooking which you say to avoid for dogs. What is your reason behind this and can I use say sunflour or pepita seeds as the flour instead.
    Kind Regards
    Trina

    1. Hi Trina,
You can use whatever flour you like. I haven’t said that you should avoid coconut or almond flour, however it does behave differently than wheat flour when baking. Any questions about what is safe for your dog should be directed to your veterinarian.
      Thanks! 🙂

        1. Thank you for your concern, Jen. My dog is not allergic to blueberries, and our vet has given us the thumbs up.
To further allay any worries, this is taken straight from the AKC website: “Yes, dogs can eat blueberries. Blueberries are a superfood rich in antioxidants, which prevent cell damage in humans and canines alike.”

  4. I’m gonna try this one..I have made many of Your Dog treat recipes, and not only do my Dogs ❤️❤️, but have shared some treats with my Friends picky Dogs.. I have experimented with lots of different combos for treats.. Thanks for sharing..

    1. Thank you so much, Shirley! I hope they love this one too! I appreciate you sharing treats and thank you for this lovely review <3

    1. Hi Grace, I’ve never used steel cut oats for my treat recipes, but I don’t see why you couldn’t. HOWEVER, steel cut oats take a lot longer to cook than regular oats, so you might want to make sure that you grind them beforehand. Par-cooking them is also an option 🙂 I hope that helps!

  5. Both my dog , and I love these treats! They are so tasty. I put them in a bowl for us to use throughout the day, and yes I did say us. 😁

  6. Hi!!! Thanks for sharing this recipe. It was a little dry so we added peanut butter, honey, one extra banana, and some goat milk. These cookies are soooo good, for my dogs and for me! 👌😁 BYE! 🙋‍♀️

  7. Hi, amazing recipes, i up the banana and blueberries to give more flavour. My 1 year Golden Retriever’s love them. Thanks again 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
