Ingredients

You’ll only need 4 ingredients to make this delicious blueberry lemonade recipe. I start by making a blueberry simple syrup, which can be used for more than just this lemonade.

  • Blueberries – The blueberries are used to make a blueberry simple syrup and they are also added to the lemonade.
  • Lemon – Freshly squeezed lemon juice gives the lemonade its tang.
  • Sugar – Adjust the sugar to your personal preference. We need a bit of sugar to balance the tartness of the lemon.
  • Water – A bit of water and ice finish off the drink.

How to make

To make this blueberry lemonade recipe, we’ll start by simmering the blueberries for a few minutes in a small pot. Then, when the berries have released their juice, we’ll strain it and combine with freshly squeezed lemon juice and water.

Blueberry syrup for drinks

Making this blueberry syrup for drinks is super simple. Many recipes call for just blueberries, water, and sugar, but those feel a bit one-dimensional. Since we’re making lemonade, a few strips of lemon zest are completely at home here.

Making blueberry syrup in red pot.

Lemon really brightens up the flavor and makes this syrup “pop”. To make the blueberry simple syrup – add water and sugar (or honey, stevia, agave, etc.) to a one quart saucepan and bring to a simmer.

Add the blueberries and lemon, lower the heat to a simmer and cook for roughly 10 minutes, until the blueberries begin to burst. Remove from heat and cool.

Strain through a fine mesh strainer for a crystal-clear blueberry syrup. Don’t toss those blueberries – save them for yogurt, muffins, ice cream or pancakes!

Another option is to purée the blueberry syrup in a blender if you like bits of blueberry in the lemonade.

It is quick and easy, and if you have prefer to make this by the glass instead of a pitcher, you can freeze some of the blueberry syrup for the next time you want to make this lemonade.

Here’s a trick for keeping your blueberry lemonade cold without watering it down – Freeze a cup of blueberries and add a handful to your lemonade instead of ice. Your drink will stay cold and it comes with a built in snack!

Variations and substitutions

  • To make this blueberry lemonade recipe a little fancier, consider adding a few sprigs of mint. It gives this lemonade a cooling, herbal flavor.
  • You can add the mint to your glass, or to the blueberry syrup as it’s cooling. If you really want to get that mint flavor, use a muddler to lightly crush the leaves in the bottom of your glass before adding the blueberry lemonade. Basil is also a nice addition, as is thyme or lemon thyme.
  • Another addition that takes this drink to grown up happy hour is a splash of vodka or limoncello. It makes a great pitcher drink when you are having friends over or hosting a gathering.

Helpful tools and equipment

To make this easy blueberry lemonade recipe, you’ll need a few basics.

  • A small pot for making the blueberry syrup.
  • To store and serve the lemonade, a glass pitcher works well.
  • If you have kiddos, a plastic pitcher may be a better option. I like this one because it is square, so it fits nicely on the shelf.

Notes

I use a lot of ice in my glass, so I make the lemonade a little stronger. If you prefer less ice, you can add up to an additional 2 cups of water, if you like the lemonade a bit weaker.
If you are straining the blueberry syrup instead of blending, save those cooked blueberries for yogurt, muffins, ice cream or pancakes!
