Langostino lobster rolls are faster, easier and less expensive than traditional lobster rolls

A long, long time ago, I spent a few years in Maine. My love for lobster was born during those years. Although it was less expensive in that area of the country, lobster can still carry a hefty price tag.

The reason is that you are paying per pound and about 75% of the weight is not lobster meat, but shell. What this means is a 1 pound lobster will yield roughly 3 ounces of lobster meat. If you need a full pound of lobster meat, you’re looking at 5 whole lobsters.

Not to mention the steaming, cracking, shelling, etc. I wanted to use our favorite langostinos for this recipe because it is so fast and so easy, you can have a langostino roll in about 10 minutes. The langostino tails are mixed with mayo, lemon juice, celery and a bit of seasoning, then piled into a split top bun. It couldn’t be easier.

what are langostino?

Langostino is a term that can be used for a few varieties of crustaceans, depending where you live. It can refer to a species of shrimp or to a certain species of lobster, although they are related to a crab.

A langoustine is in the lobster family. It is slightly different than a langostino, but because langostinos taste similar to lobster, you can substitute them in a recipe. Most of  the recipes on the blog will use langostino, which is sometimes called squat lobster.

How to cook langostino?

Most often, langostino are found frozen, already cooked and shelled. All you have to do is thaw them and they are ready to go. I have found them at Costco and Trader Joe’s. The plus side of getting them at the places I mentioned are cost and convenience.

If you want to serve them warm, a quick sauté in a hot pan and they are ready to eat. One of the quickest, easiest ways to make them is this garlic butter langostino recipe. Ready in 15 minutes flat, it doesn’t get any better. You could also toss them into your favorite seafood pasta or make a langostino chowder for a delicious treat.

I have a handful of langostino recipes that will be coming your way soon, so get a pound or two of these delicious crustaceans because good things are coming your way!

Langostino Mac and Cheese is the recipe that started the langostino craze in our house. I made it on a whim and we fell in love with them after our first bite. During our trip to New Orleans, I was obsessed with étouffée and as soon as we got home, made a langostino étouffée to celebrate Mardi Gras.

See those beautifully chopped chives on top? That simple little touch makes these look really elegant. The key to getting nicely chopped anything is a sharp knife. I’ve had this global chef’s knife for about 15 years and it is really well-suited to those of us with smaller hands.

Every now and then, I talk to you about “easy entertaining”. This recipe qualifies in so many ways. It is a great thing to serve at a summer dinner party, because once again, it’s a recipe that looks a little fancy but it really isn’t.

Have a few friends over and celebrate summer with these delicious langostino lobster rolls. Make a big platter and let your friends grab a roll, their favorite beverage and toast to spending time with your tribe.
