- 1 1/2 cups sparkling water or soda *see note // I recommend either a lemon-lime flavor or a berry flavor water
- 2 cups mixed berries *see note
- 1 cup crushed ice optional
- Honey or simple syrup if desired (*see note)
- Fresh or frozen berries as garnish
In the pitcher of a blender, combine sparkling water/soda with 2 cups of mixed berries. *If berries are frozen, omit the 1 cup of ice. If using fresh berries, add crushed ice to blender after berries and liquid.
Puree until thick and slushy. If mixture is too thick, you may have to stop the blender and stir the slush mixture around to get it going again.
Taste, and add sweetener, if desired.
Pour into two 10 - 12 ounce glasses and top each with a few frozen berries. (Frozen berries look cool and they help keep your drink cold.)
- Soda tends to be sweeter, so if you like it sweet, go with soda instead of sparkling water.
- I used blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. Use whatever you have, or whichever berries you prefer.
- If you have leftover slushy, pour into an ice cube tray and freeze. You can blend it up to make another slush.
- Make it into an adult beverage by swapping out the sparking water for vodka, gin, red, white or rosé wine.
- To make simple syrup: combine equal parts water and granulated sugar in a small sauce pan over medium-low heat. Stir to combine, and let it come to a simmer. When sugar has completely dissolved, remove from heat and set aside to cool.
- To easily freeze berries, place them on a baking sheet in a single layer. Place in the freezer for a couple of hours, then transfer to an airtight container. You can store them in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- If you are using frozen fruit, omit the ice. If you are using fresh fruit, you will need a cup of crushed ice. Crushed ice is easier on your blender than cubes, break it up if you need to, it's better than breaking your blender.
- Consider adding a few mint leaves.
