Homemade poultry seasoning

Now is the perfect time to make chicken seasoning, or turkey, or classic stuffing seasoning for the holidays. This easy poultry seasoning blend comes together in less than 5 minutes, and you can make as much, or as little, as you like.

Mix up a double batch to get you through the entire holiday season. This blend will last you up to 6 months.

What you need to know

How many times have you bought a bottle of a certain spice or herb, only needing a teaspoon or two, and then it sits in the cabinet for the next 6 months? I certainly have.

Using up the spices in your cabinet not only saves you money by utilizing what you already have, it reduces waste by using your spices and herbs before they go bad.

Using fresh spices will make a big difference. If you have spices that have been in the back of your cabinet for years, it’s time to replace them. Old spices have a dull flavor, which means that is the flavor your poultry seasoning will also have.

Making your own poultry seasoning is a great way to use up spices and dried herbs in your cabinet. It saves you some money, and a trip to the grocery store, so it’s a win on all fronts. Plus, each of these ingredients can be adjusted slightly to suit your personal tastes.

Homemade poultry seasoning FAQ’s

Can I use this poultry rub for turkey?

All poultry, including turkey, pairs really well with this blend of herbs and spices.

How much poultry seasoning do I need for a turkey?

One tablespoon per pound of turkey is a good ratio. You can always adjust it to suit your tastes.

How do you store this spice blend?

Spices should be stored in a cool, dark spot in your kitchen. Storing them near the stove or in a cabinet above the stove will make them lose their potency. Air is the biggest enemy to your spices. A close second is heat. Both of these will dull them quickly.

Variations and substitutions

  • Paprika – Add in a pinch of paprika for a sweet & peppery kick.
  • Spice grinder – If you grow your own herbs, you can dry them, then put them into a spice grinder or coffee grinder for unbelievably fresh-tasting dried herbs.

Serving suggestions

Try this homemade poultry seasoning on my roast chicken, or in my classic bread stuffing. It’s also great on pork, and roasted vegetables.
